NEXXUS IBERIA TAKES A RELEVANT PARTICIPATION IN CHEF SAM TO PROMOTE ITS EXPANSION

Chef Sam, a Spanish company specialized in launching, positioning, developing and marketing food and beverage brands with expansion potential, begins a new stage of growth and will do so in the company of the private capital manager for SMEs Nexxus Iberia, which through from fund Nexxus Iberia Private Equity Fund I (about €170 M) has taken a "very relevant although not majority" stake in the company. Control will remain in the hands of the former Danone executives who launched the company in 2016, led by Bernard Louis Hours, José Cano Serrano and Rafael Esteve.

To what does this operation obey? Although Chef Sam does not manufacture directly and therefore does not need Capex in its ordinary activity, the firm wants to face an important expansion at a European level and for this it needs to enter large countries that until now it had not faced, such as United Kingdom or Germany. From the direction of Chef Sam, it is considered that the company has acquired great notoriety, with very notable brands and with a unique business model due to the breadth of its activities and almost unique in Spain and Europe.

"We have to position the brands we represent in large European markets and each time these brands ask us for more adjacent work, such as branding work, and all this requires financial muscle”, Chef Sam sources explain. "We want to replicate the success we are having in countries like Belgium, the Netherlands or Poland in the United Kingdom and Germany, among others”. The entry of Nexxus will also be important for the development of the firm in Mexico and Latin America in general, considering that the parent company of the fund manager is Mexican-owned, "although Nexxus Iberia operates quite independently".

Currently, the five brands that contribute the most to Chef Sam's sales are 'Oatly' (vegetable drinks that it distributes for Spain, France and Portugal in retail, horeca and specialized bio channel), 'Vita Coco' (coconut water from which is in charge in Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium and the Netherlands), 'Obrador Sorribas' (veggie-bio recipes that it distributes only for conventional retail in Spain and Portugal), 'St Hubert' (margarines that it assumed for a good part of Europe, except France and Italy, and which have already positioned themselves in some 1.500 points of sale and chains such as Carrefour, Alcampo, Uvesco and El Corte Inglés) and 'Pastoret de la Segarra' (a premium yogurt brand that sells outside of Spain). In addition, it represents other brands including 'Les Noveaux Affineurs' (plant-based cheeses), 'Yamo' (plant-based baby food), 'FullGreen' (100% vegetable rice), 'Coliflow' (pizzas whose dough has a cauliflower base and a project in which it has taken 25% of the promoter), 'Yogumel' (live and fresh ferments for making yogurt and kefir), 'Itsu' (healthy Asian food), 'Tweek' (Swedish brand of healthy sweets), 'Nutrisport' (sports nutrition brand that took over for retail in Spain a few months ago), 'Tony's Chocolonely' (chocolate tablets), 'Divie' (infusions with CBD) and 'Bos Brands'.

With this extensive catalogue (which includes other brands not mentioned), the head (Chef Sam Business International Consulting) and other subsidiaries that are in charge of marketing these brands added sales last year of around €8.3 M, with a business volume for brands that it represents close to €25 million.

José Cano, founding partner and CEO of Chef Sam, stated that "I have to thank the entire Chef Sam team and network for their support and effort from the moment we started this company in 2016. We are convinced that the entry of Nexxus Iberia in the capital will strengthen our business and the value proposition to our clients and partners in the long term". Meanwhile, Alejandro Diazayas, partner at Nexxus Iberia, commented that "the investment in Chef Sam represents another key milestone in our plan and proves our strategy as financial partners. We are supporting a brilliant team of entrepreneurs with a remarkable level of knowledge, with high strategic vision and the ambition to become a market leader".

In a statement issued because of this operation, Nexxus Iberia explains that it is a private equity fund manager founded in 2016 to support small and medium-sized Spanish and Portuguese companies to accelerate growth and expand internationally in Europe, Latin America and the United States. The team is led by former 3i partners and Nexxus Capital partners who have more than 20 years of experience in the private equity industry in Spain, Portugal and Mexico. Last July it left the capital of Grupo Otsu, which integrates the networks and health brands of Dorsia (aesthetic medicine), Clínicas EVA (reproductive medicine) and Origen (psychology), which it had entered in 2018; and a month earlier, it divested from Bienzobas Salud, a company specializing in the provision and management of medical oncology services. On the other hand, in January of this same year it entered the manufacturer of functional ingredients Solutex, a benchmark in the manufacture of high Omega 3 concentrates for nutrition, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
